"To be recognized along with my peers is so very special and a reflection of the incredible work of the members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service who continue, every day, to make a difference in the lives of our citizens," Larkin said in a release Friday morning ahead of accepting the award.

"Equally, I am grateful for the continued support of the police services board, our members, our community as well as my 'family.'"

The Order of Merit of the Police Forces was started in October 2000 to recognize those who have made exceptional contributions to policing and community development.

In total, 51 people were named to the order on Friday: one commander, four officers and 46 members.
