2 injured in Waterloo balcony collapse, 9 metre fall
Two Waterloo residents were injured Monday night when the small balcony they were standing on collapsed, falling about nine metres to the ground.
"The two tenants were outside on the balcony. As they turned to head back in, the balcony collapsed," said Staff Sgt. Mike Haffner.
Waterloo police officers were called to 84 Albert Street at 11:30 p.m., arriving to find the balcony in one piece on the ground.
Nearby residents reported a police presence at the back of the house late Monday.
A 22-year-old woman and 21-year-old man were injured during the fall and taken to Grand River Hospital. Haffner did not know the condition of either of the injured persons, or whether they had been released.
"We had our forensic identification branch attend and take photographs and samples of the deck," he said.
"From a criminal perspective, it's the negligence of the tenants or the landlord that comes into question in these investigations. [We're] trying to determine who was responsible and if there was anything that could have been done or should have been done to ensure the safety of the people that were involved."
Police continue to investigate the incident and Haffner could not say when the investigation would be complete.
