University of Guelph student dies in kayaking accident near Georgetown
Kaya Firth found dead, boyfriend Zach Sutherland missing
A University of Guelph student has died and her boyfriend is still missing after a kayaking accident at the Credit River north of Georgetown on Sunday.
The body of Kaya Firth, a third-year English student, was recovered Sunday after officers were called to Terra Cotta, located approximately 60 km northwest of Toronto, after there were reports two empty kayaks were stuck in some ice in the middle of the river.
Firth was pronounced dead at the scene.
The search continues for Zach Sutherland.
Members of the OPP underwater search and recovery unit began helping search for Sutherland Monday morning.
University of Guelph officials said Sutherland is a fourth-year commerce student.
"We are deeply saddened by this news," university president Franco Vaccarino said in a statement. "Our hearts and thoughts go out to the friends and families of these two vibrant young people."
Police did not confirm the identities of Sutherland and Firth.
