Suspect in Cambridge woman's killing found with gunshot wound, police say
Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit now investigating
A suspect in the killing of Helen Schaller has been rushed to Hamilton General Hospital for treatment of what police believe is a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Schaller was killed April 17, after being shot to death in a parking lot in the Preston area of Cambridge.
On Friday, Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) Chief Bryan Larkin said officers had a number of active investigative leads.
On Saturday, police said an investigation led them to Franklin Boulevard and Savage Drive in Cambridge.
39-year-old suspect
Officers were in the area investigating a man "wanted on numerous outstanding criminal charges" who was also a suspect in Schaller's homicide.
According to police, emergency response team officers found the 39-year-old suspect in a wooded area "with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound."
Officers provided medical assistance to the man and he was rushed to Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Later, he was taken to Hamilton General Hospital.
Now, Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is looking into the matter.
The SIU investigates matters involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
They said the WRPS emergency response team had been dispatched around 11 a.m. to "conduct a high-risk takedown."
According to the SIU, officers were told that a person of interest was in a vehicle in a gas station parking lot on Franklin Boulevard.
At some point, the suspect drove into a nearby wooded area and was found suffering from a gunshot wound shortly afterward by police, the SIU said.
According to the SIU, three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the incident.
WRPS say they will release no further information on the investigation.
