Salary list spreads 'sunshine' on top university, college earners

Ontario's annual 'Sunshine List' of public-sector salaries has shed light on the top wage-earners at the region's universities and colleges.

Salaries of top people at universities in Waterloo Region and Guelph were illuminated by the so-called Sunshine list Thursday, despite an ice storm and heavily overcast skies in the area.

The annual revelation of publicly-funded salaries over $100,000 showed top earners at Ontario agencies, boards, police and educational institutions.

Top educational salaries in the region included: 

University of Waterloo 

  • $399,999.96. Feridun Hamdullahpur, president.
  • $310,045.72. Scott Thomas, professor. 
  • $305,000.04. Ian Orchard, vice president, Academic and Provost.
  • $281,474.48. David D.G. Cory,professor.
  • $279,999.96. George Dixon, vice president University Research.

The highest paid woman on the list for the University of Waterloo is Pearl Pek Wah Sullivan, Dean of Engineering, $251,511.12

Wilfrid Laurier university 

  • $371,417.90. Max Blouw,president of WIlfrid Laurier university.
  • $357,998.84. James Orbinski, faculty.
  • $308,575.78. Deborah Mclatchy, provost and vice president Academic.
  • $285,218.64. Robert Donelson, vice president Development and Alumni relations.
  • $261,209.46. Hugh Munro, faculty.

The highest paid woman on the list for Wilfrid Laurier university is Deborah Mclatchy, Provost and vice president Academic, $308,575.78.

University of Guelph

  • $423,648.06. Franco Vaccarino, president.
  • $339,081.64. Alastair Summerlee, associate professor.
  • $318,956.12. Maureen Mancuso, professor. 
  • $264,144.48. Donald O'Leary, assistant professor.
  • $246,289.96. Paul Hebert, assistant professor.

The highest paid woman on the list for the University of Guelph is Maureen Mancuso, professor,$318,956.12.

Conestoga College

  • $409,900.00. John Tibbits, president. 
  • $186,237.00. Marlene Raasok, executive dean, School of Health and Life Sciences.
  • $184,481.04. Michael Dinning, vice president student affairs. 
  • $182,237.52. Russell McLay, chief administrative officer and general counsel.
  • $163,527.11. Barbara Kelly, vice president, academic administration.

The highest paid woman on the list for Conestoga College is Marlene Raasok, executive dean, School of Health and Life Sciences, $186,237.00.

Not raising the bar

Premier Kathleen Wynne, who was paid said $209,374 in salary and benefits, said she had no plans to raise the $100,000 threshold for the sunshine list, even though it was set 20 years ago.

"I think there are lots of people, many, many thousands of people in this province, who would say $100,000 is still a lot of money to earn," she said. "I think it's still relevant at that rate, and so that's why we've left it there," Wynne said.
