Residents being asked for thoughts on large new southwest Kitchener park

A new park is coming to southwest Kitchener that will offer more than a playground and splash pad. The city is hoping residents will offer their input at an open house Thursday.

Residents are being asked to give their input on a new park in southwest Kitchener, set to open in the spring of 2019.

The city is hosting an open house Thursday. The South Kitchener District Park (SKDP), located along Huron Road and Fisher-Halman Road, will include a playground and splash pad,  lawn spaces, soccer fields, a basketball court, a tennis court, a volleyball court, a multi-use field and eventually a recreation centre.

Staff will provide an update of the project during the open house and residents will have a chance to weigh in on what they would like to see for public art, a playground and splash pad.

The City of Kitchener says it will build South Kitchener District Park in three phases. Green represents phase one, red represents phase two, yellow represents phase three and blue is for a future phase, which aims to build a recreation centre in 2026. (City of Kitchener)

3 phase construction

The city said the park will be constructed in three phases. Phase one, currently underway, will consist of the construction of the primary park roadway, parking area, site services, several turf fields, stormwater management and relocation of a heritage house.

Construction for phase two will consist of improving walking trails and landscaping, parking lots, service buildings and adding the tennis court, basketball court and the volleyball court.

The city adds that the mid-19th century heritage home will be renovated into a washroom facility near the courts during this phase.

The final phase of construction will add a skate park, a bike track and complete any remaining work.

"The two remaining phases will complete the park, which will also be home to a recreation complex scheduled to be built in 2026," the city stated in a release.

Residents are invited to attend the open house on Thursday between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Dedication Centre in the Williamsburg Cemetery on Fischer-Hallman Rd.
