A 30-year-old man is in stable condition after a shooting at a Kitchener home early Wednesday morning. Police say the man was transported to hospital with gunshot wounds following an altercation at the home just after 2 a.m. CBC K-W's Karis Mapp attended an update police held about the shooting.

A man was sent to hospital after a shooting in Kitchener, Ont., early Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to the area of Vanier Drive and Massey Avenue just after 2 a.m. ET after reports a man had been shot.

"We located a 30 year-old male who was suffering from gunshot wounds," said Insp. Kyle Lambert of Waterloo regional police at a media update on scene Wednesday morning.

"He was transported to an out-of-region hospital suffering from serious injuries. He's now in stable condition."

Police say there was an altercation that happened inside the home and a 30-year old female victim was involved but wasn't injured.

Investigators add a suspect was seen leaving the area. He's described as a male with light brown skin, tall with a larger build wearing dark clothing and a hoodie.

"We haven't recovered a firearm so obviously that's a concern to investigators," Lambert said. "But in terms of any schools in lockdown or anything, that wouldn't be an issue at this time because we do think it's a targeted incident."

3rd shooting this year

Wednesday's shooting was the third regional police have responded to this year. Though, it was the first with a victim who was injured.

In 2024, there were 22 shootings in the region.

Police say cracking down on gun violence is a top priority and they have crime suppression measures in place, as well as increasing patrols.

"Some of these investigations obviously involve co-operation from our victims, co-operation from our witnesses but it's a major concern," Lambert said.

"We did have 22 last year so hopefully we don't get to that number and we're doing everything that we can in our power not to."
