Second Waterloo Region enterovirus D68 case confirmed
Region of Waterloo Public Health has confirmed a second case of enterovirus D68, less than one week after the first case was identified by staff at Grand River Hospital.
The respiratory virus has made some children seriously ill in Canada and in the United States.
Within Ontario, D68 cases have been confirmed in Toronto, Hamilton, Windsor and Ottawa.
According to a public health update, the total number of people in the region who are suffering from the illness is unknown, because many people who exhibit symptoms do not seek medical attention.
Public Health says people can protect themselves from enterovirus D68 using similar measures to avoiding the flu or common cold, such as regular hand washing and disinfecting frequently touched objects such as toys or doorknobs.
It also encourages residents to seek medical attention if they develop high fevers, coughs or experience difficulty breathing.
