Record-breaking cold sets in Waterloo Region and area
Bitterly cold temperatures around –24 C, combined with winds gusting up to 30 to 50 km/h on Sunday afternoon will make it feel like –30 to –40 in Waterloo Region, Guelph, northern and southern Wellington Counties, Arthur, Erin and Mount Forest, says Environment Canada.
The weather agency has issued an extreme cold warning for southwestern Ontario, warning people to "exercise extreme caution...Frostbite on exposed skin may occur in just a few minutes."
Sunday night and Monday morning will also be very cold, with windchills making it feel around –30 to –35.
A record low temperature of –26.8 C for Feb. 15 was recorded Sunday morning at Region of Waterloo International Airport, barely beating a 1987 record of –26.7 C, says Mitch Meredith, a meteorologist at Environment Canada.
Meredith added that average temperatures for the week of Feb. 15 for Waterloo Region are between –2 C and –10 C, based on the past 30 years.
"[We're] definitely well below normal," he said.
On Friday, Waterloo Region broke two extreme cold records in one day.
