No Waterloo Region high school teacher strike on Monday

All Waterloo Region District School Board high schools will be open on Monday, May 4th after the board said it had not received a five-day notice of an intent to strike from the local high school teachers union, as required by provincial law.

All Waterloo Region District School Board high schools will be open on Monday, May 4th after the board said it had not received a five-day notice of an intent to strike from the local high school teachers union, as required by provincial law.

The statement from the board comes as tensions remain high between local school administrators and local representatives of the elementary and secondary teachers unions as they try to hammer out new labour deals.

Waterloo Region high school teachers were in a legal strike or lockout position as of May 4, but the local union has not yet issued an official notice of an intent to strike.

"We haven't received anything," WRDSB spokeswoman Lynsey Meikle said Thursday. "So we have no reason to believe that schools won't be open."

Waterloo Region elementary school teachers will be in a legal strike or lockout position by May 10, and they must also provide at least five days notice of such job action, as required by provincial law.
