MPP Michael Harris introduces Safe Roundabout Act for the third time
The bill calls for consistency in rules and design of roundabouts across the province
For the third time since 2012, Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris introduced the Safe Roundabout Act, which calls for roundabouts to be added to the Highway Traffic Act.
Harris introduced the act on Wednesday at Queen's Park.
"Roundabout isn't a word mentioned in the Highway Traffic Act and I think it's time to modernize our laws to reflect the reality of our roads," he said.
He adds that having consistent rules, regulations and design standards, will clear some of the confusion drivers, pedestrian and cyclists feel towards roundabouts.
"We're asking the minister [of transportation] to consult with experts, create a set of rules and regulations surrounding roundabouts and embed them in the Highway Traffic Act," said Harris.
Harris says the move will benefit Waterloo Region, which has many roundabouts, and other municipalities like Mississauga and Ottawa.
'Third time is the charm'
The bill continues to have the support from the Waterloo Regional Police, the Motor Coach Association of Canada and the CAA South Central Ontario division.
Harris says he thinks the reason the bill was rejected in the past is that some members don't have roundabouts in their community and so don't see roundabout safety as an issue. But he remains hopeful that this time, his proposal will come through.
"I'm hopeful that the third time is the charm on this one," he said.
