Susana Dumitru, 29, identified as mother killed in Highway 7 crash west of Kitchener
Her two-month old son was critically hurt in a crash with a suspected drunk driver
Police have identified Susana Dumitru, a 29-year-old woman from London, Ont., as the mother who died in a two-car crash that also left her two-month-old baby boy with critical injuries on Sunday night, west of Kitchener.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the collision happened at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday on Highway 7 at Trussler Rd in Wilmot Township.
Four family members, including Dumitru, her husband, their infant son and the boy's grandmother were travelling together in a car when it was rear-ended by a suspected impaired driver.
Both Dumitru and her infant son were airlifted to hospital, where Dumitru was pronounced dead and the baby boy remains in critical condition, according to police.
Suspect refused breath sample
The father and grandmother of the baby both suffered minor injuries, according to police.
The OPP says the suspected impaired driver, a 26-year-old Kitchener man, faces eight charges, including dangerous driving causing death, two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing death and two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
Investigators add the suspect has also been charged with failing to provide a breath sample and failing to submit to a drug evaluation following the crash.
Schmidt said the suspect is scheduled for a bail hearing Monday in a Kitchener court.
'Please do not drink and drive'
"Please do not drink and drive," said Schmidt.
"If anyone is out enjoying activities that include consumption of alcohol or drugs, please do not get behind the wheel of a vehicle at any time. It is far too dangerous. And you can see the tragic outcomes that can come as a result of that."
Schmidt said the Cambridge OPP are seeking witnesses to the deadly crash. Police would also like to speak to anyone with dash cam video.
