Love troubles this Valentine's Day? Try these break up songs
Canadian music for the cynics and the broken-hearted
This time of year it's all roses and romance. But not everyone is in the mood for love.
While In the Key C's host Craig Norris took a look at some of Ontario listener's favourite love songs, I decided to do the opposite, making a soundtrack of songs for the cynics and the broken-hearted this Valentine's Day. Here are my top picks for break up songs by Ontario musicians.
Remember, you can listen live to In the Key of C across Ontario, excluding the GTA, on Saturday evenings starting at 5 p.m. Or you can stream it via the CBC Radio music app, or online at cbc.ca/radio.
Tourist Bureau - Life Goes On
Thunder Bay's Tourist Bureau released their record Saint Patricks Square in June 2015, and on it is a song titled "Life Goes On."
As is the case with most break-up songs, this one is equal parts bitter, nostalgic and hopeful— and it's got a catchy pop hook.
All in all, not bad for the broken-hearted.
Basia Bulat - Fool
"Fool" is a song off Basia Bulat's new record Good Advice, which was released Friday and is being touted as a break-up record.
Bulat wrote the album following a heartbreak. Then she travelled to Louisville, Kentucky to record it with My Morning Jacket's Jim James.
It's a departure from Bulat's classic folk songs that featured autoharp and a slew of other unique stringed instruments. Instead, this album plays more into the R&B genre with electronic elements and full drum lines.
This song is for all those fools that fall in love.
Stonetrotter - What's Goin' On (With My Love)?
Barrie's Stonetrotter has a seriously smooth soul vibe, making your love troubles a little easier to handle.
"What's Goin' On (With My Love)?" is from the band's self-titled album released in October 2015, and it features the line: "I've been sitting and waiting, listening to my dial tone." And if we're being honest, we've all been there.
This is a good one to groove to as you make dinner-for-one on Valentine's Day.
