The man was a passenger in the cab until he threatened the driver with a small axe and demanded money, said Waterloo Regional Police in a news release Monday.
The driver managed to disarm the passenger after a small scuffle, and the man then ran from the cab at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
Police were able to track him down near Dumfries Avenue and Krug Street. The 19-year-old has been charged with robbery, breach of probation and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Police say the taxi driver wasn't physically harmed during the altercation.
