Kitchener allowing patios 'as long as possible' as winter approaches

The City of Kitchener is extending its patio program until the end of the year, and plans to allow restaurants and bars to serve patrons outdoors "as long as possible." 

More than 60 local operators have extended or added outdoor patios at their establishments since the program began earlier in the year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city said in a statement.

"Extending the patio season, I hope will give owners options while staying within provincial and regional public health guidelines," said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. "Heated outdoor patios this upcoming winter season, could be a great way to support local businesses while still following public health guidelines."

The city will permit patios to continue into the new year, it said, so long as the province allows them beyond January 1, 2021. 

Waterloo city council voted to extend its sidewalk patio program until January 2022 earlier this month, meaning they can continue to operate until the start of sidewalk snow clearing. Guelph's downtown dining district and temporary patio program will continue until November 30. 

In Kitchener, the city said staff would be contacting bars and restaurant operators with information and resources. Operators will need to follow building codes and fire requirements if they plan to install temporary tents or heaters, and will be in charge of clearing snow and ice on private property.
