A 22-year-old Kitchener man is facing a number of charges after he allegedly drove a stolen vehicle at police officers that were trying to pull him over, and one officer fired his gun to stop him.

Officers approached a vehicle, which they believed had been stolen, that was parked at an apartment building at 109 Westwood Drive at about 2 p.m. Thursday.

Police say the man drove towards the officers in an attempt to escape.

The vehicle was temporarily stopped by a concrete barrier and an officer shot at the vehicle to try to stop it from leaving.

The driver was able to flee the area, but the vehicle was inoperable, police said.

The man was found on Mooregate Crescent, about a kilometer away, and arrested.

No one was injured, police said.

The 22-year-old man is facing a slew of charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, assault with a weapon, possession of prohibited weapon, drug possession and three counts of breach of probation. The man also had an outstanding warrant for robbery.

Police Chief Bryan Larkin said he was proud of how the officers handled the situation and made the arrest.

"These types of situations remind us all of the dangers of policing as we strive to strengthen public safety through crime prevention and law enforcement," Larkin said in the police release.
