Heads up riders — it will cost you more to board the bus in Waterloo region as of Canada Day

Heads up for transit riders, Grand River Transit fares will be going up as of Canada Day by another 2.5 per cent, bringing the cost of an adult ticket from $3.50 to $3.75.

Grand River Transit says the increase to fares is to keep up with rising cost of operating transit

Grand River Transit (GRT) users will soon pay an additional 25 cents to board the bus starting July 1.

Transit fares will increase by an average of 2.5 per cent to meet the rising cost of operating transit, GRT said in a release. The increase will also help grow the network "to encourage future ridership."

Fare prices were also approved during the 2023 budget process.

Cost breakdown:

  • The price of a single ticket will go from $3.50 to $3.75.
  • Paying with EasyGO fare card will go from $2.92 to $2.98
  • Fare paid with the EasyGO fare card through GRT's affordable pass goes from $1.52 to $1.55

The increase also affects the cost of monthly passes. A regular monthly pass will cost $92 from $90. Monthly passes through the affordable transit program will go up by a dollar, from $46.80 to $47.84.

University students will also pay a little more for the U-Pass, as it'll cost $113.30 rather than the $106.61 price.

GRT says those who purchase their July monthly pass before Canada Day will pay the June rate.
