Some Wellington county schools closed today due to icy weather
Up to 5 cm of snowfall is expected throughout Thursday
Several schools in Wellington county have been closed Thursday because of icy weather.
The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) says the closures are only for schools located in zones two to four, which includes Centre Wellington, North Wellington, Erin, Rockwood and Dufferin.
The UGDSB says schools will remain open in zone one, which includes South Wellington, Guelph and Puslinch.
The school board says students will shift to remote learning where possible.
All offices are closed in affected areas, too. And staff are being asked not to report to work in person.
Flash freeze warning for Guelph-Wellington, Waterloo region
Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory and a flash freeze warning for Guelph-Wellington, Waterloo region and surrounding areas.
In a notice posted online, the weather agency says people should take extra care when walking or driving.
"Icy and slippery conditions are expected to develop as temperatures rapidly fall below the freezing mark," Environment Canada said in the flash freeze warning. "Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous... Ponding water, slush, and any falling precipitation will freeze as the temperature drops."
Environment Canada says there will also be reduced visibility because of up to 5 cm of blowing snow.
"Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays," the weather agency said in its winter weather travel advisory.
"Snow will continue through [Thursday]. Strong northwesterly winds will develop this afternoon leading to reduced visibility due to local blowing snow especially for exposed areas. The snow and strong winds are expected to ease this evening."
