Afternoon GO express train to Kitchener possible 'in the near future,' province says

A spokesperson for Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek says Metrolinx has been directed to add express trains to Kitchener and they hope to make an announcement about it soon.

Transportation minister has directed Metrolinx to add express trains

GO train riders frustrated by the lack of an express train from Union Station to Kitchener in the afternoon may soon get good news.

"Metrolinx is continuing to work towards two-way, all-day GO service to Kitchener. The minister has directed Metrolinx to add express trains to Kitchener as part of the plan. We hope to make an announcement on express trains in the near future," Andrew Buttigieg, press secretary for Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek.

There's no timeline for when an express train could be reintroduced.

Fannie Sunshine, a media relations officer for Metrolinx, says they are working on a solution.

"We are working with CN, which owns part of the Kitchener Line, to deliver on the commitment to re-introduce an express trip as soon as possible. We will be sure to tell people as soon as this is confirmed," Sunshine said in an email.

Previously GO offered an express train that left Toronto at 4:50 p.m., but it was dropped from the schedule earlier this month.

Frustrated riders then complained of overcrowding on the other trains back to Waterloo region.

In response, the province added two more train cars to the 5:02 p.m. train to Kitchener.
