Retired Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield is asking Canadians to make a New Year's resolution to change the world.

"There are problems with everything and nothing's yet perfect. But that shouldn't be cause to bemoan, it should be cause to achieve," Hadfield said in a video titled "An Astronaut's Guide to Optimism" that was published to YouTube Saturday.

The video, which has already racked up over 200,000 views, features Hadfield walking through a cafe, running through a list of scientific, health and philanthropic success stories of the past century, and urging people to commit to making a difference.

"When thinking if you're going to be optimistic this year, remember, nobody changes the world on their own," said Hadfield, who started working as an adjunct professor at the University of Waterloo earlier this year.

"It all starts with a resolution, what's yours?"
