Cambridge agrees to reconsider sports multiplex location

After a significant showing by concerned citizens at a special council meeting this week, the City of Cambridge has decided to look at alternative locations for its proposed multiplex complex.

After a significant showing by concerned citizens at a special council meeting this week, the City of Cambridge has decided to look at alternative locations for its proposed multiplex complex.

"There will be community consultation, regarding the site selection process over the next four months, including evaluation of alternative locations," said Kent McVittie, city commissioner of community services.

A number of residents are unhappy with the initial choice of location for the multiplex at Conestoga College, saying the location better serves residents of south Kitchener than Cambridge.

The city had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the college to lease the land for the new recreation multiplex.

The decision to look at alternative locations may mean delaying the facility's planned opening date.

Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig told CBC News that he hoped the multiplex would be open and running by 2020.
