Cambridge to lower speed limits to 40 km/h in neighbourhoods across city
Speed limit drops to 30 km/h in school zones

Cambridge will lower speed limits to 40 km/h in neighbourhoods across the city.
Speed limits in school zones will drop to 30 km/h while council also approved a reduction to 50 km/h on Allendale Road, Boxwood Drive, Cherry Blossom Road and Royal Oak Road.
The decision was made Tuesday night by Cambridge council. Councillors agreed with a staff report that said the move will make roads safer.
"A lot of studies have shown that it's about a minute to a minute and a half increase on a 10 kilometre drive ... when you're decreasing from 50 to 40 km/h," Coun. Sheri Roberts said.
"I think that everyone around the table would agree that a couple of minutes is a small price to pay to save life."
Coun. Scott Hamilton called the move a "win-win for both residents and children."
"I know compliance will take time," he said. "Even if this reaches five, 10, 15 per cent of the community, that's still potential lives saved."
Staff are expected to bring a follow-up report to council on how the lowered speed limits will be phased in. That report is expected later this year.
