Cambridge pedestrian bridge over Grand River gains support

Build it and we will come, say some Cambridge residents about a possible pedestrian bridge over the Grand River.

About 220 residents have signed a petition supporting the bridge and favour placing it between Concession Sreet and Queen's Square in downtown Galt.

Mayor Doug Craig first proposed the idea to get more residents down to the river during his State of the City address last May.

"You know people came here because of the river system we have here, and they set up their mills on the river," said Craig. "And the river has been a place of recreation for boating, for ice skating. It has been an integral part of the whole Cambridge community and the former communities."

The mayor says he's planning on budgeting bridge money for 2016, and estimates it will cost about $1 million to build.
