Cambridge Councillor Frank Monteiro dies
Monteiro first elected to council in 2010
Cambridge Ward 7 Coun. Frank Monteiro has died.
Monteiro died Tuesday morning just before 11a.m. surrounded by his family, the city said in a release.
"Frank was a wonderful advocate for Cambridge and his constituents and he approached every issue with empathy, passion and common sense," Cambridge Mayor Kathryn McGarry said in a news release.
"His work over the years has made the city a stronger and better place and he will be missed immensely by many in this community."
Monteiro was first elected to council in 2010, representing the area of south-east Galt.
Prior to becoming a councillor, Monteiro spent 35 years as a police officer with the Waterloo Regional Police Service. He was both the first Portuguese police officer and the first Portuguese city councillor in the region, the news release said.
As a councillor, he championed a variety of community services and initiatives including the fire department, farmer's market and downtown development.
Monteiro is survived by his wife, two children and grandchildren.
A message from Monteiro to the community will be read at Tuesday's council meeting. Flags at city hall will be flown at half mast and books of condolence will be available beginning Wednesday.
Funeral arrangements are forthcoming, the city said.
