Guelph police have arrested a 31-year-old man from Fergus after a series of overdoses, some fatal, in the city.

On Wednesday, the police service's drug unit arrested the man and searched a house in Fergus.

Police say they uncovered "suspected drugs," cash, cellphones, a computer and a knife.

According to police, there have been an increase in fentanyl overdoses including two that killed people.

They're warning the public there may be a more potent batch of the drug on the streets right now, and are telling drug users to carry naloxone, never use alone and to use the consumption and treatment site at Guelph's Community Health Centre on Wyndham Street North.

They're also reminding the public about the "Good Samaritan Law," which prevents a rescuer from being charged criminally for simple possession of controlled substances, even if they are illegal drugs.
