$15.5M 'world class' beef research centre to be built in Elora
Will replace facilities at the Elora Research Station, built in 1969
A new $15.5 million beef research centre will be built in Elora to help Ontario researchers work on improving livestock health and welfare.
The University of Guelph announced the new facility Thursday. Funding for the centre will come from the school, the provincial and federal governments, and the Beef Farmers of Ontario. The centre will be operated in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
"This new facility will expand and elevate our hub for world-class bovine research in Ontario," Malcolm Campbell, the university's vice-president, research, said in a release.
It will include leading-edge technologies and will be "an exceptional example of the potency of university-government-industry collaboration," Campbell said.
The new facility will replace beef labs at the Elora Research Station that were built in 1969. The new research facility is set to open in 18 months.
The university said the centre will complement the Livestock Research Innovation Centre – Dairy Facility, which opened in 2015 in Elora.
