Kidnapping suspect turns himself in

The suspect in a violent kidnapping in B.C. gave himself up Tuesday

A 74-year-old B.C. woman was shaken up Tuesday, after a kidnapping suspect walked into her home to give himself up.

Ernest Meigs, 27, is accused in the violent kidnapping of his ex-girlfriend, Alicia Jobb, 21.

The elderly woman had been following the story on the news. She was alone when Meigs entered her home near Merritt, B.C., telling her he was sick and wanted to turn himself in. She quickly ran next door.

"Merritt RCMP had the house surrounded by 10 officers within minutes," Surrey RCMP Const. Tim Shields said.

The kidnapping took place last Wednesday. A man broke into Alicia Jobb's home and raped a 29-year-old tenant. The man then went upstairs, assaulted other members of Jobb's family and dragged Alicia out of the house at gunpoint. She managed to escape the next day.

Police issued a Canada-wide warrant for Meigs's arrest. They described him as dangerous and armed with a long-barrelled shotgun. Helicopters, tracking dogs and roadblocks were used to try to track him down.

Jobb had been involved in a relationship with Meigs for six to eight months, but the two had broken up about two weeks ago.

Meigs is charged with seven counts, including sexual assault, unlawful confinement and assault with a weapon.
