Tiger-Cats acquire top pick in CFL draft in trade with Alouettes

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have acquired the top selection in Thursday's CFL draft in a trade with Montreal involving two players and multiple picks.

In addition to the top pick, Hamilton receives Montreal's fourth- and sixth-round picks in 2018, as well as the Alouettes' natural second-round selection in 2019.

The Alouettes obtain Canadian offensive lineman Ryan Bomben, international wide receiver Jamal Robinson, the second-overall pick on Thursday, Hamilton's fourth- and seventh-round selections and a player from its negotiation list.

Players on Hamilton's negotiation list include quarterback Johnny Manziel but the Tiger-Cats confirmed that the player in the deal was not Manziel.

Bomben, 30, returns to Montreal, where he played his first four CFL seasons before being acquired by the Ticats on May 12, 2015. The six-foot-five, 295-pound native of Burlington, Ont., has played 120 CFL games with Montreal and Hamilton over his seven-year career.

Robinson, 25, served the final month of the 2017 season on the Tiger-Cats practice roster after spending parts of two seasons (2016-17) with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. The six-foot-four, 205-pound native of Slidell, La., attended mini-camp with the Tiger-Cats last week.

Earlier, the Tiger-Cats landed the sixth overall pick and a fifth-round selection (No. 37 overall) in the '18 draft from the Edmonton Eskimos for the first pick of the second round (No. 10) and a third-round selection (No. 20).

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and B.C. Lions also traded selections.

The Lions acquired Winnipeg's first- and second-round 2018 selections — the seventh and 16th overall picks.

In return, the Bombers landed B.C.'s 2019 first-round selection as well as its second-round choice (No. 12 overall) in this year's draft.
