Hamilton

REPLAY: LIVE transit debate

Can you afford LRT? Can Hamilton afford not to have it? We've seen what Metrolinx is proposing for funding options for The Big Move, what the province is planning for GO service. Now, let's talk about it.

It's time to talk about Hamilton's transit future.

Last week, Metrolinx released its final funding report for The Big Move, a regional transit project that will heavily effect moving the people of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area. It is proposing a series of controversial fees and taxes to raise  the $2 billion needed to expand regional transit, including a one per cent hike to the HST.

The wheels for improved local transit are already moving in Hamilton. Ontario's transportation minister officially unveiled the new GO Transit station on James Street North, including increased service starting in time for the 2015 Pan Am Games. Come September, King Street will get a bus-only lane to improve transit times between Mary and Dundurn streets.

Join CBC Hamilton online on Tuesday, June 4 at 7 p.m. for a live webcast on Hamilton's transit future. What does the city need? And how will Hamiltonians pay for it?

Three local community leaders will debate Hamilton's public and regional transit needs from a social, economic and financial perspective. City councillor Lloyd Ferguson, social planner with the Hamilton Social Planning and Research council Sara Mayo and Hamilton business leader and Metrolinx board member Richard Koroscil will be in the CBC Hamilton studio for a live debate, hosted by reporter Julia Chapman.
