Hamilton police say they are investigating the theft of a trailer with roughly $1 million in surgical masks last summer.

Spokesperson Jackie Penman said four trailers with surgical masks were moving from the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in early July, but one was stolen.

She said it was reported a few days after it happened.

"We are working with Purolator and the Government of Canada on the investigation," she wrote in an email.

Given the time delay in receiving the report of the stolen masks, and the fact that there was no threat to public safety, police decided not to issue a media release about the theft, Penman said.
