Environment Canada has issued a snow squall warning for parts of the Niagara Region, Norfolk County and Haldimand County.

The weather agency says snow squalls are possible for tonight and Wednesday, and "locally heavy snowfall with accumulations of 10 to 15 cm" is expected, with "peak snowfall rates of 2 to 5 cm per hour."

Niagara Falls, Welland and the southern Niagara Region will be affected.

Environment Canada warns to be aware of "very poor visibility at times in heavy snow."

"Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone," the weather agency's warning says.

The agency says "lake effect snow squalls over Lake Erie could move inland tonight and may become mixed with rain Wednesday afternoon."

A snow squall, Environment Canada said, can cause "changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres."

Have an emergency plan and an emergency kit with essentials like "drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight," Public Safety Canada said.
