Niagara police say they have arrested and charged another man in the death of a 52-year-old prisoner.

That brings the total to eight, all of whom were also prisoners in the Niagara Detention Centre in Thorold, Ont., police spokesperson Stephanie Sabourin confirmed in an email.

As CBC News previously reported, the 52-year-old died under "suspicious" circumstances in June, sparking an investigation. Since Feb. 22, police have announced they are charging multiple people with second-degree-murder in connection to his death.

Late Friday afternoon, Niagara police announced a second-degree murder charge against a 44-year-old man from Pelham, Ont.

He was scheduled for court on Saturday in St. Catharines.
