3 new Ontario songs you need to hear this week
Check out new music from Family of Things, Donovan Woods and Nyssa
Every day, musicians write, record and release new music in Ontario — so each week, we're bringing you some of our favourites.
Music columnist Adam Carter is on CBC Radio One's In the Key of C on Saturdays, with your guide to what's new and exciting in Ontario music.
Here are this week's picks:
Family of Things: Harm
Harm has a great backbeat and feel, and that grabbed me right away.
I also love this opening lyric:
"Loving you is going to do me harm, but I don't give a damn."
Nyssa: Hey Jackie
Hey Jackie is really interesting in that it blends electro-pop and folk sounds. The vocals and slide guitar have a borderline country feel, while the electronic elements scream the mid-80s.
Nyssa says it's the story of an independent, "wayward" woman who's in charge of her fate.
"Stories shape us and allow us to control our own destines," she says. "Somehow, though, stories of female outcasts are still a rarity. How are we supposed to break free if we don't see ourselves in that role? I want to live in a world where women are allowed the full scope of their appetites. I want to remove the shame from the equation and unfetter the desire. I want to play my part in shifting the narrative."
Donovan Woods: Great Escape
Great Escape is from Donovan Woods' latest album The Other Way, which is full of acoustic reimaginings of songs from his last album, the Juno-winning Both Ways.
Even stripped down, these songs carry an immense power.
