One Hamilton factory just got a lot sweeter.

Mondelēz Canada, the candy-manufacturing company home to Sour Patch Kids and Fuzzy Peaches, officially opened a new "state of the art" production line Wednesday at its Hamilton factory.

The total cost of the investment, they say, was a whopping $40 million — it allowed the factory to expand and add 50 new jobs to the already 350-strong team of candy makers.

Current employees at the factory will also benefit and receive "significant up-skilling" to work with the latest manufacturing technology, according to a release from Mondelēz.

"We are so proud to make Maynards, that are sold across North America, right here in the heart
of Hamilton. This significant investment represents another exciting chapter for the Ewen Road site," said Martin Parent, president of Mondelēz Canada. "With this new line, Hamilton leads the way in advanced food manufacturing."

The factory's new production line makes around 11 million candies per day, the release said, and the size of the site was expanded by 15,000 square feet.

"The new line at Mondelēz Canada's Hamilton candy factory has to be one of the sweetest investments ever made in our city," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger. "This investment by Mondelēz Canada is a strong vote of confidence in our community and our people."

$250 million has also been invested into the other Greater Toronto Area sites, including its East York bakery and Scarborough bakery.
