Forty-four golf carts were stolen from a golf course in Lincoln, Ont., Niagara police say, in the middle of the night.

They say it happened on Nov. 14 at Lincoln's Rockway Glen Estate Golf Course and Winery.

Niagara Regional Police say the 2020 EZGO Tempo Golf Carts are worth $10,000 each and they were stolen some time between 11 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

They believe the carts were driven two km across the course. Then, the suspects cut a hole in a fence and drove onto a vineyard service road to a transport vehicle or vehicles believed to be waiting in the area of Ellis Ave. and Eleventh St.

"What does one do with 44 golf carts?," asked Const. Phil Gavin of Niagara police.

He says the carts are big enough that whoever took them would have had to load them into many large vehicles.

"To be able to move that many and get them clear of the area would have taken many people and resources," Gavin said. "You would have needed to have multiple people to move the carts two km to the pick up point."

Gavin said that each cart has individual markings much like a car's licence plate. He is asking members of the public who to contact Niagara police at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009935.

Gavin said eight detectives have been assigned to the investigation.
