Peg+Cat adds up to a DayTime Emmy for Hamilton's Cory Bobiak
Peg+Cat takes home 3 awards
Hamilton is home to a new Daytime Emmy winner — but you probably only know him if you live in a house with a four year old.
Peg+Cat, a children's show directed by Hamilton’s Cory Bobiak, won three DayTime Emmy awards including outstanding preschool children's animated program Friday night.
Part of the animated show’s charm is the painstaking hours spent hand painting the backgrounds, Bobiak told CBC Hamilton. “It’s very rare. Most shows are done totally digitally now,” he said. “But you can feel it — you can see the paint texture and feel the brush strokes. You connect to it.”
The PBS show is an adventure series where a cast of animated characters solves problems using math. It’s intended for kids ages three to five — but it’s smart enough for people much older, Bobiak says.
“Most preschool shows treat kids like they’re not too smart, but here an adult can watch it and enjoy it.”
This is the first time Bobiak has won an award of this scope, and was quite surprised, seeing as he was up against a heavyweight Disney show. “But this is a pretty special show,” he said. “The reason it’s so successful is we’ve amassed an amazing group of people working on it.”
The show is still in its first season, and has only been on the air for seven months. With an Emmy in hand, Bobiak figures they should be able to plug away on it for a while longer. “I think it should ensure we’ll work on it for another season or two."
Pet+Cat took home three awards at the Emmys. Jennifer Oxley also won for Production Design and Hayley Faith Negrin won for outstanding performer in a children's series for her portrayal of Peg.
