A Hamilton man's car was "extensively damaged" and spray-painted Thursday in what police are investigating as a hate crime.

Police were called in after a man found his car had been vandalized while sitting in the parking lot of a building at 20 Congress Court overnight.

Someone smashed the car's windows and slashed the tires, as well as spray-painted the inside and outside of the car.

Police say the messages included an "anti-Arab statement."

Const. Steve Welton says police have collected physical evidence at the scene and are now canvassing for video surveillance in the area.
