Man charged with dangerous driving on the Red Hill Valley Parkway

20 year old Hamilton man charged with stunt driving for going at 172km/hr instead of 90km/hr

He was driving at 80km/hr over the stipulated speed limit

A 20-year-old Hamilton man was charged with stunt driving early Tuesday morning after police say he was caught driving 172 km/hr in a 90km/hr zone. He was driving on the Red Hill Valley Parkway near Greenhill Avenue.

Just shortly after midnight, a Hamilton police officer was in the area when he observed an SUV travelling northbound along the parkway. The officer then used a speed measuring device and obtained a reading of 172km/hr and stopped the SUV.

The driver was charged with stunt driving and will appear in court at a later date to answer to this charge. His licence was seized and his vehicle towed from the scene and impounded for 7 days.

According to the Hamilton police, upon conviction, a stunt driving offender will face a minimum fine between $200 and $2,000, a maximum fine between $1,000 and $10,000 as well as two years for a first conviction.

In March, police charged a 30-year-old Hamilton man with stunt driving charge after police say he was travelling nearly 150 km/h on the Red Hill Valley Parkway.

Late last year, a consulting firm hired by the city took a look at safety on the Red Hill Valley Parkway and the Lincoln Alexander Parkway.

They produced a report that recommended $4,395,200 in safety measures on the Red Hill and $5,966,090 on the Linc.

The Red Hill Valley Parkway has seen 474 collisions, or about 63 per year since the parkway opened, the report says. Of those, 131 were median-related collisions.

A detailed review shows that more than 500 vehicles a day go faster than 140 kilometres per hour and the 85th percentile drive at 115 kilometres per hour or faster.
