A Hamilton man learned an important lesson on Sunday — if you have $3,500 worth of drugs in your car, don't stunt drive.

Hamilton police say an officer patrolling around Barton Street East and Prospect Street North saw two cars weaving in and out of traffic around 8 p.m. They were going "at a high rate of speed" before police stopped one of the cars near Shelby Avenue — nearly three kilometres down the road.

"The officer also heard the cars accelerate and race each other from multiple stop lights" before they could stop one of them, police said in a media release.

The officer approached the car to arrest the driver for stunt driving, police say. During the arrest, the officer noticed a small amount of marijuana, a hydromorphone capsule more than 30 grams of cocaine and "other evidence consistent with trafficking narcotics."

Police say the street value of the drugs was about $3,500.

The car was towed away and is impounded for seven days. A 28-year-old man is charged with stunt driving, possession of cocaine with intent to traffic, possession of marijuana and possession of other drugs.

The other vehicle, a dark sedan, fled the scene.
