Local man charged with fraud for selling dozens of fake event tickets
Police are aware of 75 victims, and worry there may be more
Shaun Michael Nixon, a 36-year-old Hamilton man, is under arrest for allegedly selling at least 75 people non-existent tickets to concerts, sports, and other events.
Police say he has been running this scam for the past year, posting ticket deals online and being sent money from people around Canada and across the border.
But the customers never received any tickets. Police say they are aware of 75 victims, and are looking for more.
Nixon allegedly used email money transfers and other money transfer businesses to conduct the transactions, and sometimes, police say, he would use the bank account of a woman he had duped to receive money from other customers.
A joint investigation by Peel Police and Toronto Strategic Partnership finally led to Nixon's arrest. He is charged with fraud over $5,000 and failure to comply with probation.
Toronto Police want to remind the public that buying event tickets from unlicensed sellers is risky, since there is no protection. They recommend against people using money transfer services or email money transfers unless the recipient is someone you know personally.
