A Toronto man is facing a number of drug-related charges after police allege he tried to smuggle nearly one kilogram of heroin into Canada from Pakistan.

RCMP say the investigation began three weeks ago when U.S. customs officers in northern Kentucky intercepted a package containing clothing and several sparring paddles – cushioned paddles used for martial arts training – that originated in Pakistan.

It's alleged that on close examination of the package destined for Toronto, officers discovered about 957 grams of heroin concealed in the sparring paddles.

The package was transported to Hamilton, where it was seized by Canada Border Services Agency officers and turned over to the Mounties.

Jacob Mensah, 50, is charged with importing drugs into Canada, possession for the purpose of trafficking and conspiracy.

He has been released on bail, with another court appearance set for Oct. 10.

Police say the investigation is continuing and more charges are expected.
