Kevin Smith sets porn star comedy in Brantford, Ont.
Story about a porn star who returns to his roots is being developed for The Movie Network
Indie filmmaker Kevin Smith’s next project, Prons, is a comedy about a famous porn star who leaves the industry to return to his hometown of Brantford, Ont. — and the Clerks director says he wants to film on-location.
“My love affair with Canada continues,” Smith said when he announced the project Tuesday. The L.A.-based director previously starred in and produced a movie review web series called Spoilers for Canada's The Comedy Network.
This time around, Smith is teaming up with writer and Brantford native Aaron Martin (Saving Hope) to develop Prons for pay-TV channel The Movie Network.
When prompted by a fan who tweeted, “As a native of Brantford, please tell me Prons will be shot in Brantford,” Smith replied, “That's the aim!”
Sparked by Smith’s Prons announcement, online reaction from Brantford residents was overwhelmingly positive, ranging from excitement that their hometown is getting a moment in the spotlight to offers to host Smith and his crew in people’s homes should they need a place to crash.
“We've teamed up with Comedy — who made Season 2 of Spoilers and Noreen Halpern (my Hit Somebody producer — to tell the story of a different kind of homecoming,” Smith said.
There is no word yet on a production schedule or who will play the role of the Brantford-bred porn star.
The horror-comedy Tusk, written by Smith and starring Haley Joel Osment, will be playing at Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
