At the Tim Hortons on Ottawa Street the coffee is still fresh. Not bad for a pot that's been brewing for 48 years.

Tim Hortons first ever location celebrates  its 48th birthday today. The first store opened in 1964. Right now, there are more than 3,000 locations in Canada and over 600 in the United States.

When the doors first opened, it was just coffee and donuts on the menu. Donuts were a dime apiece. The apple fritter and dutchie were the most  popular choices back then and still are today, but if you were looking for Timbits in 1964 you were about 12 years too early.

Alexandra Cygal, manager of public affairs for Tim Hortons, says there are more than  60 Tim Hortons locations in Hamilton.

She says "Hamilton is really important to us. It's where we got our start."

She says Ancaster is important too. That's where the company opened its 1,000th restaurant in 1995 and where it hosts the facility that roasts all of its coffee beans that are sent all over the country.

Cygal says there's nothing special planned at the store to commemorate today's birthday, but the company has big plans for the 50th anniversary of the store's opening in 2014.
