Hamilton men unwittingly helped 1972 Munich terrorists

Wednesday night on CBC's The National, reporter Ioanna Roumeliotis told the story of two athletes from Hamilton and the unintended assistance they gave to the men who killed 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Jack Gauldie of Hamilton joins David Hart, formerly of Hamilton, and Byron McDonald of Toronto in remembering how they  snuck over a fence into the Olympic complex.

When they jumped the fence they weren't alone. They met some other men who turned out to be members of Black September, a Palestinian terrorist organization that killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches at the 1972 Olympic Games.

The three Canadians, who were teenagers then, give an emotional account of the terrifying hostage taking.

"These were people who worked hard to get to the Olympics, people who were the same age," Gauldie says in the segment.

Gauldie and Hart were on the Canadian water polo team, while McDonald was on Canada's swim team.
