Car driver charged in Red Hill collision that sent transport truck into creek

A Hamilton woman has been charged with careless driving in the collision that sent a transport truck into the Red Hill Creek, forcing the closure of the southbound lanes for the majority of Tuesday.

The  48-year-old was driving a sedan that lost control on an on-ramp, went over the curb of the ramp and ended up in oncoming traffic. The transport truck, driving south on the Red Hill Valley Parkway around 8:15 a.m., swerved to avoid hitting her head on, went through the guardrail and flipped into the creek below the parkway.

Both drivers walked away from the collision, however the woman driving the sedan went to hospital with minor injuries. Hamilton Police said "weather has played a factor" in Tuesday's crash, which closed the highway through the evening commute. The road didn't open until roughly 11 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Cleanup complete

Diesel fuel spilled into the creek, and a Hazmat team was sent by Hamilton Fire to try and contain the spill. The Ministry of Environment was called in to assist with cleanup.

Ministry spokesperson Lindsay Davidson said that roughly 100 litres of fuel spilled into the creek, a spill that was contained by 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Ministry staff conducted an assessment downstream to Windermere Basin and there was no environmental impacts," Davidson said.
