A three-year-old Pelham, Ont. boy is clinging to his life after his dad accidentally ran him over with a lawn mower, police say.

It happened around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday at the family's Niagara Region home.

The 32-year-old father was cutting the grass on a riding lawn mower, police say. He thought his son had gone into the house, but didn't know the boy had come back outside.

As the man cut the front lawn, his toddler followed him behind the mower. When the man reversed, police say, the mower hit the three-year-old, knocked him to the ground and ran him over.

An off-duty Hamilton paramedic supervisor lived next door and ran to help his neighbour. He helped Pelham fire fighters and Niagara EMS stabilize the boy and transport him to a local hospital.

The boy has since been transported to an out-of-region hospital, where he is in critical condition.

Police aren't releasing names at the family's request. Niagara Regional Police continue to investigate.
