So long warm weather, winter is back

Snow is on its way — so pull out your parka and toque because winter isn't over yet. Thursday's weather is set to be cold and windy with a high of -1 C in the forecast.

With just a few weeks until spring, it would seem that Mother Nature got a jump on the next season early.

Hamilton reported the warmest February on record.

"We came in with the average temperature for the month of - 0.1 C. That beat the old record for the warmest February of - 0.6 C, set back in 1998," said Geoff Coulson, senior climatologist at Environment Canada.

February also had the least snow. Only 9.6 centimetres of snow fell during the month.

"Normal February snowfall is around 35 centimetres," Coulson added.

March returns like a wet lion

But it was too good to be true. Winter weather is coming back fast as the temperature swings below 0.

March rolled in at a wet and balmy 12.9 C yesterday, breaking a temperature record set in 1997.

The temperature fell from there. Environment Canada reported an approximate 20 C difference in temperature between Wednesday and Thursday.

A high of -1 C in the forecast for today, but it will feel like - 7.

"It's just a reminder that spring really isn't here just yet," said Coulson.

Environment Canada says that the cold weather system that moved into southern Ontario on Wednesday with a notable "rain event" is normal for this time of year.

Colder than normal temperatures are expected until Sunday, according to the national weather agency.

Friday morning has a 30 per cent of snow, clearing in the afternoon. A high of -3 C. (Elaine Thompson/The Associated Press)
