An educational assistant (EA) at a St. Catharines, Ont., school has been arrested after police say he physically assaulted a student who was under nine years old.

The incident happened on Dec. 17 at Saint Alfred Catholic Elementary School on Vine Street, said Niagara Regional Police Service in a news release.

A child was "involved in a disturbance" in a classroom, when they were moved to another room by two EAs, said police.

There, one of the EAs physically assaulted the child and used a blanket as a weapon, police said.

The child was not physically injured.

Police said they're not revealing the age or gender of the child to protect the child's identity.

The EA, a 28-year-old man, was arrested and charged with assault and assault with a weapon on Friday.

Corrections

  • An earlier version of the story incorrectly said the victim was nine years old. In fact, police said the student was under nine years old.
