If you've recently gotten an email from the city about a traffic ticket, watch out — it's fake, the city says.

Officials say people have been receiving emails about traffic violations.

"They are fraudulent," a city news release reads. "Citizens are reminded that the City of Hamilton will not issue a traffic violation via email. This is not the City of Hamilton process."

Traffic tickets can only be issued by an enforcement agency like Hamilton police, OPP, and McMaster University security.

The courts notify defendants of outstanding fines by mail, with contact information on it.

"Defendants are not contacted via email," the city says.
