Join us for a live event featuring things, ideas and people that have been forged in Hamilton
The CBC Hamilton team is excited to announce a live community event featuring things, ideas and people that have been forged in Hamilton.
The event will take place Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at our station, 118 James Street North.
Six speakers will present quick-moving, visual talks on grit and glamour behind the scenes of local ingenuity.
The event will be inspired by a popular presentation format promoted by an organization called PechaKucha. In that format, speakers display a series of 20 images for 20 seconds each and each talk clocks in under seven minutes.
The event is free to attend but space is limited; reserve your spot here.
What will we learn about?
Our speakers and topics include:
- FREEDOM FROM SLAVERY: How fleeing and freed slaves built a community in Hamilton's first black church: Evelyn Auchinvole, historian of Stewart Memorial Church.
- THE BRUCE TRAIL: How a steelworker by day sparked a 900-kilometre trail: Beth Gilhespy, CEO of the Bruce Trail Conservancy, on the trailblazing work of Ray Lowes.
- ROMA PIZZA: The mystery and cult-like following behind a Hamilton staple: Dave Hanley, co-creator of Pop Up Hamilton dining events.
- WONDER WOMEN: Powerful women from Hamilton's history — those you've heard of and some you haven't: Andrea Horwath, Hamilton Centre MPP and the leader of the Ontario NDP.
- The WOOLLY MAMMOTH: Can a mammoth be brought back from extinction? Emil Karpinski, a graduate student and researcher at McMaster University's Ancient DNA Centre, on genome sequencing for ancient species and the possibilities of de-extinction.
- STEELTOWN: Steelmaking 101 — We all know steel is made in Hamilton, but how many of us really understand what goes on on Burlington Street? A speaker from ArcelorMittal Dofasco will bring us into the blast furnace.
We're looking forward to it; we hope you'll join us.
